An Introduction by Daniel Libeskind
"The twenty first century will be the century of cities. In a global world, the city of the future is no longer a fantasy but a reality. As cities become more dense and as the complexity of modern life transforms the very structure of them, the exploration of the future is no longer a luxury but a necessity. The transformation of contemporary cities can take an unfortunate dystopian turn; the shrinking of public spaces, the lack of nature and fresh air, the nightmare of transportation and the separation of economic classes: an oppressive shadow unto the future. Conversely, a positive evolution of the city can lead to a greater awareness of how to use limited resources in order to create a democratic, diverse, beautiful and sustainable city. It is of utmost significance that designers explore and propose solutions for the future of the world which is synonymous with the future of cities. Now is a turning point in which cities hang in the balance. Either, cities will become unlivable for the many or only affordable for the few. Or, cities will recover their connection to great traditions in which urban form is a reflection of cultural, social and spiritual life of its citizens."
